" Wait a minute , prince , " said Aglaya , suddenly rising from her seat , " do write something in my album first , will you ? Father says you are a most talented caligraphist ; I 'll bring you my book in a minute . " She left the room .

-- Постой, князь, -- сказала Аглая, вдруг поднявшись с места, -- напиши-ка ты сначала что-нибудь в мой альбом, а? Отец говорит, что ты талантливейший каллиграф; Я принесу тебе мою книгу через минуту. Она вышла из комнаты.

" Well , au revoir , prince , " said Adelaida , " I must be going too . " She pressed the prince 's hand warmly , and gave him a friendly smile as she left the room . She did not so much as look at Gania .

-- Ну, до свидания, принц, -- сказала Аделаида, -- мне тоже пора. Она тепло пожала руку принцу и дружелюбно улыбнулась ему, выходя из комнаты. Она даже не посмотрела на Ганю.

" This is your doing , prince , " said Gania , turning on the latter so soon as the others were all out of the room . " This is your doing , sir ! You have been telling them that I am going to be married ! " He said this in a hurried whisper , his eyes flashing with rage and his face ablaze .

-- Это твое дело, князь, -- сказал Ганя, включив последнего, как только все вышли из комнаты. — Это ваша работа, сэр! Ты говорил им, что я выхожу замуж! Он сказал это торопливым шепотом, его глаза сверкали от ярости, а лицо пылало.

" I assure you , you are under a delusion , " said the prince , calmly and politely . " I did not even know that you were to be married . "

-- Уверяю вас, вы в заблуждении, -- сказал князь спокойно и вежливо. — Я даже не знал, что ты собираешься жениться.

" You heard me talking about it , the general and me . You heard me say that everything was to be settled today at Nastasia Philipovna 's , and you went and blurted it out here . You lie if you deny it . Who else could have told them ? Devil take it , sir , who could have told them except yourself ? Did n't the old woman as good as hint as much to me ? "

— Вы слышали, как я говорил об этом, генерал и я. Вы слышали, как я сказал, что сегодня все должно быть улажено у Настасьи Филипповны, а вы пошли и ляпнули здесь. Вы лжете, если отрицаете это. " If she hinted to you who told her you must know best , of course ; but I never said a word about it . "

" Did you give my note ? Is there an answer ? " interrupted Gania , impatiently .

But at this moment Aglaya came back , and the prince had no time to reply .

Но в это время вернулась Аглая, и князь не успел ответить.

" There , prince , " said she , " there 's my album . Now choose a page and write me something , will you ? There 's a pen , a new one ; do you mind a steel one ? I have heard that you caligraphists do n't like steel pens . "

-- Вот, князь, -- сказала она, -- мой альбом. Теперь выбери страницу и напиши мне что-нибудь, хорошо? Есть ручка, новая; ты против стального? Я слышал, что вы, каллиграфы, не любите стальные ручки.

Conversing with the prince , Aglaya did not even seem to notice that Gania was in the room . But while the prince was getting his pen ready , finding a page , and making his preparations to write , Gania came up to the fireplace where Aglaya was standing , to the right of the prince , and in trembling , broken accents said , almost in her ear :

Разговаривая с князем, Аглая как будто и не заметила, что Ганя был в комнате. Но пока князь готовил перо, находил страницу и готовился писать, Ганя подошел к камину, где стояла Аглая, справа от князя, и дрожащим, прерывистым акцентом сказал, почти по-своему: ухо:

" One word , just one word from you , and I 'm saved . "

«Одно слово, всего одно твое слово, и я спасен».

The prince turned sharply round and looked at both of them .

Принц резко обернулся и посмотрел на них обоих.

Gania 's face was full of real despair ; he seemed to have said the words almost unconsciously and on the impulse of the moment .

Лицо Гани было полно настоящего отчаяния; он, казалось, сказал эти слова почти бессознательно и под влиянием момента.

Aglaya gazed at him for some seconds with precisely the same composure and calm astonishment as she had shown a little while before , when the prince handed her the note , and it appeared that this calm surprise and seemingly absolute incomprehension of what was said to her , were more terribly overwhelming to Gania than even the most plainly expressed disdain would have been .

Аглая смотрела на него несколько секунд с точно таким же хладнокровием и спокойным удивлением, какое она выказывала несколько раньше, когда князь подавал ей записку, и казалось, что это спокойное удивление и как бы абсолютное непонимание сказанного ей, были страшнее для Гани, чем даже самое явно выраженное пренебрежение.

" What shall I write ? " asked the prince .

«Что мне написать?» — спросил принц.

" I 'll dictate to you , " said Aglaya , coming up to the table . " Now then , are you ready ? Write , ' I never condescend to bargain ! ' Now put your name and the date . Let me see it . "

— Я вам продиктую, — сказала Аглая, подходя к столу. — Итак, вы готовы? Пишите: «Я никогда не снисхожу до торга!» Теперь назовите свое имя и дату. Позволь мне увидеть это."

The prince handed her the album .

" Capital ! How beautifully you have written it ! Thanks so much . Au revoir , prince . Wait a minute , " she added , " I want to give you something for a keepsake . Come with me this way , will you ? "

"Капитал! Как красиво Вы это написали! Большое спасибо. До свидания, принц. Подождите, — добавила она, — я хочу подарить вам кое-что на память. Пойдем со мной сюда, хорошо?

The prince followed her . Arrived at the dining-room , she stopped .

Принц последовал за ней. Дойдя до столовой, она остановилась.
