" Pétya ! Be quiet , I tell you ! " cried the count , with a glance at his wife , who had turned pale and was staring fixedly at her son .

«Петя! Молчи, говорю тебе!» - вскричал граф, взглянув на свою жену, которая побледнела и пристально смотрела на сына.

" And I tell you -- Peter Kirílych here will also tell you ... "

— А я вам говорю — и Петр Кирилыч здесь вам скажет…

" Nonsense , I tell you . Your mother 's milk has hardly dried on your lips and you want to go into the army ! There , there , I tell you , " and the count moved to go out of the room , taking the papers , probably to reread them in his study before having a nap .

Pierre was agitated and undecided . Natásha 's unwontedly brilliant eyes , continually glancing at him with a more than cordial look , had reduced him to this condition .

Пьер был взволнован и нерешителен. Необыкновенно блестящие глаза Наташи, беспрестанно поглядывавшие на него более чем приветливым взглядом, довели его до этого состояния.

" No , I think I 'll go home . "

— Нет, думаю, я пойду домой.

" Home ? Why , you meant to spend the evening with us ... You do n't often come nowadays as it is , and this girl of mine , " said the count good-naturedly , pointing to Natásha , " only brightens up when you 're here . "

"Дом? Да ведь вы хотели у нас провести вечер... Вы и так теперь не часто приезжаете, а эта моя девушка, - добродушно сказал граф, указывая на Наташу, - только светлеет, когда вы ты здесь.

" Yes , I had forgotten ... I really must go home ... business ... " said Pierre hurriedly .

— Да, я забыл... мне действительно пора домой... по делам... — торопливо сказал Пьер.

" Well , then , au revoir ! " said the count , and went out of the room .

«Ну, тогда до свидания!» — сказал граф и вышел из комнаты.

" Why are you going ? Why are you upset ? " asked Natásha , and she looked challengingly into Pierre 's eyes .

"Почему ты уходишь? Почему ты грустишь?" — спросила Наташа и вызывающе взглянула в глаза Пьеру.

" Because I love you ! " was what he wanted to say , but he did not say it , and only blushed till the tears came , and lowered his eyes .

"Потому что я тебя люблю!" вот что он хотел сказать, но не сказал, а только покраснел до слез и опустил глаза.

" Because it is better for me to come less often . .

«Потому что мне лучше приходить реже. .

" Why ? No , tell me ! " Natásha began resolutely and suddenly stopped .

"Почему? Не говори мне!" Наташа начала решительно и вдруг остановилась.

They looked at each other with dismayed and embarrassed faces . He tried to smile but could not : his smile expressed suffering , and he silently kissed her hand and went out .

Они посмотрели друг на друга с растерянными и смущенными лицами. Он попытался улыбнуться, но не смог: улыбка его выражала страдание, и он молча поцеловал ей руку и вышел.

Pierre made up his mind not to go to the Rostóvs ' any more .

Пьер решился больше не ходить к Ростовым.

After the definite refusal he had received , Pétya went to his room and there locked himself in and wept bitterly . When he came in to tea , silent , morose , and with tear-stained face , everybody pretended not to notice anything .

После полученного решительного отказа Петя пошел к себе в комнату, заперся там и горько плакал. Когда он вошел к чаю, молчаливый, угрюмый и с заплаканным лицом, все делали вид, что ничего не замечают.

Next day the Emperor arrived in Moscow , and several of the Rostóvs ' domestic serfs begged permission to go to have a look at him . That morning Pétya was a long time dressing and arranging his hair and collar to look like a grown-up man . He frowned before his looking glass , gesticulated , shrugged his shoulders , and finally , without saying a word to anyone , took his cap and left the house by the back door , trying to avoid notice . Pétya decided to go straight to where the Emperor was and to explain frankly to some gentleman-in-waiting ( he imagined the Emperor to be always surrounded by gentlemen-in-waiting ) that he , Count Rostóv , in spite of his youth wished to serve his country ; that youth could be no hindrance to loyalty , and that he was ready to ... While dressing , Pétya had prepared many fine things he meant to say to the gentleman-in-waiting .

На следующий день государь прибыл в Москву, и несколько крепостных Ростовых испросили разрешения съездить посмотреть на него. В то утро Петя долго одевался и приводил в порядок прическу и воротник, чтобы походить на взрослого мужчину. Он нахмурился перед зеркалом, жестикулировал, пожал плечами и, наконец, никому не сказав ни слова, взял фуражку и вышел из дома через заднюю дверь, стараясь не привлекать к себе внимания. Петя решил пойти прямо туда, где находился государь, и откровенно объяснить какому-то фрейлину (он воображал, что государь всегда окружен фрейлинами), что он, граф Ростов, несмотря на свою молодость, желает служить своей стране; что молодость не может быть помехой верности и что он готов... Одеваясь, Петя приготовил много хороших слов, которые он хотел сказать камердинеру.
