A young fellow entered the ante-room at this moment , with a bundle of papers in his hand . The footman hastened to help him take off his overcoat . The new arrival glanced at the prince out of the corners of his eyes .

В это время в прихожую вошел молодой человек с пачкой бумаг в руке. Лакей поспешил помочь ему снять шинель. Новоприбывший искоса взглянул на принца.

" This gentleman declares , Gavrila Ardalionovitch , " began the man , confidentially and almost familiarly , " that he is Prince Muishkin and a relative of Madame Epanchin 's . He has just arrived from abroad , with nothing but a bundle by way of luggage -- . "

-- Этот господин заявляет, Гаврила Ардалионович, -- начал тот доверительно и почти фамильярно, -- что он князь Мышкин и родственник госпожи Епанчиной. Он только что прибыл из-за границы, не имея ничего, кроме узла в качестве багажа...

The prince did not hear the rest , because at this point the servant continued his communication in a whisper .

Остальных князь не слышал, потому что в этот момент слуга продолжил свое общение шепотом.

Gavrila Ardalionovitch listened attentively , and gazed at the prince with great curiosity . At last he motioned the man aside and stepped hurriedly towards the prince .

Гаврила Ардалионович слушал внимательно и с большим любопытством глядел на князя. Наконец он жестом отодвинул человека в сторону и поспешно шагнул к принцу.

" Are you Prince Muishkin ? " he asked , with the greatest courtesy and amiability .

— Вы князь Мышкин? — спросил он с величайшей любезностью и любезностью.

He was a remarkably handsome young fellow of some twenty-eight summers , fair and of middle height ; he wore a small beard , and his face was most intelligent . Yet his smile , in spite of its sweetness , was a little thin , if I may so call it , and showed his teeth too evenly ; his gaze though decidedly good-humoured and ingenuous , was a trifle too inquisitive and intent to be altogether agreeable .

Это был удивительно красивый молодой человек лет двадцати восьми, светловолосый, среднего роста; он носил небольшую бороду, и его лицо было очень умным. И все же улыбка его, несмотря на ее сладость, была немного тонкой, если можно так выразиться, и слишком ровно обнажала зубы; его взгляд, хотя и решительно добродушный и простодушный, был слишком пытливым и пристальным, чтобы быть вполне приятным.

" Probably when he is alone he looks quite different , and hardly smiles at all ! " thought the prince .

«Наверное, когда он один, он выглядит совсем по-другому и почти не улыбается!» подумал князь.

He explained about himself in a few words , very much the same as he had told the footman and Rogojin beforehand

Он рассказал о себе в нескольких словах, почти так же, как и раньше говорил лакею и Рогожину.

Gavrila Ardalionovitch meanwhile seemed to be trying to recall something .

Гаврила Ардалионович между тем как будто пытался что-то припомнить.

" Was it not you , then , who sent a letter a year or less ago -- from Switzerland , I think it was -- to Elizabetha Prokofievna ( Mrs. Epanchin ) ? "

— Так не вы ли послали год или меньше того назад письмо — кажется, из Швейцарии — Елизавете Прокофьевне (миссис Епанчиной)?

" It was . "

"Это было."

" Oh , then , of course they will remember who you are . You wish to see the general ? I 'll tell him at once -- he will be free in a minute ; but you -- you had better wait in the ante-chamber , -- had n't you ? Why is he here ? " he added , severely , to the man .

— О, тогда, конечно, они вспомнят, кто ты. Вы хотите видеть генерала? Я ему сейчас скажу — через минуту он будет свободен; а вам... вам лучше подождать в передней, не так ли? Почему он здесь? — строго добавил он мужчине.

" I tell you , sir , he wished it himself ! "

-- Говорю вам, сэр, он сам этого хотел!

At this moment the study door opened , and a military man , with a portfolio under his arm , came out talking loudly , and after bidding good-bye to someone inside , took his departure .

В это время дверь кабинета отворилась, и военный с портфелем под мышкой вышел, громко разговаривая, и, попрощавшись с кем-то внутри, удалился.

" You there , Gania ? " cried a voice from the study , " come in here , will you ? "

— Ты здесь, Ганя? — крикнул голос из кабинета. — Иди сюда, а?

Gavrila Ardalionovitch nodded to the prince and entered the room hastily .

Гаврила Ардалионович кивнул князю и поспешно вошел в комнату.

A couple of minutes later the door opened again and the affable voice of Gania cried :

Через пару минут дверь снова отворилась, и приветливый голос Гани крикнул:

" Come in please , prince ! "

— Проходите, пожалуйста, князь!

General Ivan Fedorovitch Epanchin was standing in the middle of the room , and gazed with great curiosity at the prince as he entered . He even advanced a couple of steps to meet him .

Генерал Иван Федорович Епанчин стоял посреди комнаты и с большим любопытством смотрел на вошедшего князя. Он даже сделал пару шагов ему навстречу.

The prince came forward and introduced himself .

Князь вышел вперед и представился.
