Dólokhov said that he and his companion were trying to overtake their regiment , and addressing the company in general asked whether they knew anything of the 6th Regiment . None of them knew anything , and Pétya thought the officers were beginning to look at him and Dólokhov with hostility and suspicion . For some seconds all were silent .

Долохов рассказал, что он и его товарищ пытались догнать свой полк, и, обращаясь к роте вообще, спросил, знают ли они что-нибудь о 6-м полку. Никто из них ничего не знал, и Пете показалось, что офицеры стали смотреть на него и на Долохова враждебно и подозрительно. Несколько секунд все молчали.

" If you were counting on the evening soup , you have come too late , " said a voice from behind the fire with a repressed laugh .

— Если вы рассчитывали на вечерний суп, вы пришли слишком поздно, — сказал голос из-за камина со сдержанным смехом.

Dólokhov replied that they were not hungry and must push on farther that night .

Долохов ответил, что они не голодны и этой ночью должны идти дальше.

He handed the horses over to the soldier who was stirring the pot and squatted down on his heels by the fire beside the officer with the long neck . That officer did not take his eyes from Dólokhov and again asked to what regiment he belonged . Dólokhov , as if he had not heard the question , did not reply , but lighting a short French pipe which he took from his pocket began asking the officer in how far the road before them was safe from Cossacks .

Он передал лошадей солдату, который помешивал котел, и присел на корточках у костра рядом с офицером с длинной шеей. Этот офицер не сводил глаз с Долохова и снова спрашивал, к какому он полку принадлежит. Долохов, как будто не слыша вопроса, не ответил, а, закурив короткую французскую трубку, которую он вынул из кармана, стал спрашивать офицера, насколько дорога пред ними безопасна от казаков.

" Those brigands are everywhere , " replied an officer from behind the fire .

«Эти разбойники повсюду», — ответил офицер из-за костра.

Dólokhov remarked that the Cossacks were a danger only to stragglers such as his companion and himself , " but probably they would not dare to attack large detachments ? " he added inquiringly . No one replied .

Долохов заметил, что казаки представляют опасность только для отставших, таких как его товарищ и он сам, «но, вероятно, они не осмелятся напасть на большие отряды?» — добавил он вопросительно. Никто не ответил.

" Well , now he 'll come away , " Pétya thought every moment as he stood by the campfire listening to the talk .

But Dólokhov restarted the conversation which had dropped and began putting direct questions as to how many men there were in the battalion , how many battalions , and how many prisoners . Asking about the Russian prisoners with that detachment , Dólokhov said :

Но Долохов возобновил прервавшийся разговор и стал задавать прямые вопросы о том, сколько человек в батальоне, сколько батальонов и сколько пленных. Отвечая на вопрос о русских пленных этого отряда, Долохов сказал:

" A horrid business dragging these corpses about with one ! It would be better to shoot such rabble , " and burst into loud laughter , so strange that Pétya thought the French would immediately detect their disguise , and involuntarily took a step back from the campfire .

«Ужасное дело таскать эти трупы с собой! Лучше бы такого сброда расстрелять», — и разразился громким смехом, таким странным, что Петя подумал, что французы сразу заметят их маскировку, и невольно отступил на шаг от костра.

No one replied a word to Dólokhov 's laughter , and a French officer whom they could not see ( he lay wrapped in a greatcoat ) rose and whispered something to a companion . Dólokhov got up and called to the soldier who was holding their horses .

На смех Долохова никто не ответил ни слова, а французский офицер, которого они не могли видеть (он лежал завернутый в шинель), встал и что-то прошептал товарищу. Долохов встал и позвал солдата, державшего лошадей.

" Will they bring our horses or not ? " thought Pétya , instinctively drawing nearer to Dólokhov .

— Привезут они наших лошадей или нет? — подумал Петя, инстинктивно приближаясь к Долохову.

The horses were brought .

Лошадей привезли.

" Good evening , gentlemen , " said Dólokhov .

— Добрый вечер, господа, — сказал Долохов.

Pétya wished to say " Good night " but could not utter a word . The officers were whispering together . Dólokhov was a long time mounting his horse which would not stand still , then he rode out of the yard at a footpace . Pétya rode beside him , longing to look round to see whether or not the French were running after them , but not daring to .

Петя хотел сказать: «Спокойной ночи», но не мог произнести ни слова. Офицеры перешептывались. Долохов долго садился на свою лошадь, которая не стояла на месте, потом выехал со двора шагом. Петя ехал рядом с ним, желая оглянуться, не бегут ли за ними французы, но не решался.

Coming out onto the road Dólokhov did not ride back across the open country , but through the village . At one spot he stopped and listened . " Do you hear ? " he asked . Pétya recognized the sound of Russian voices and saw the dark figures of Russian prisoners round their campfires

Выйдя на дорогу, Долохов поехал обратно не через поле, а через деревню. В одном месте он остановился и прислушался. "Ты слышишь?" он спросил. Петя узнал звуки русских голосов и увидел темные фигуры русских пленных у костров.

When they had descended to the bridge Pétya and Dólokhov rode past the sentinel , who without saying a word paced morosely up and down it , then they descended into the hollow where the Cossacks awaited them .

Спустившись на мост, Петя и Долохов проехали мимо часового, который, не говоря ни слова, угрюмо расхаживал по мосту, затем спустились в лощину, где их ждали казаки.

" Well now , good-by . Tell Denísov , ' at the first shot at daybreak , "' said Dólokhov and was about to ride away , but Pétya seized hold of him .

«Ну вот, до свидания. Скажи Денисову, «с первым же выстрелом на рассвете», — сказал Долохов и хотел было уехать, но Петя схватил его.

" Really ! " he cried , " you are such a hero ! Oh , how fine , how splendid ! How I love you ! "

"Действительно!" - воскликнул он. - Ты такой герой! О, как хорошо, как великолепно! Как я люблю тебя!"

" All right , all right ! " said Dólokhov . But Pétya did not let go of him and Dólokhov saw through the gloom that Pétya was bending toward him and wanted to kiss him . Dólokhov kissed him , laughed , turned his horse , and vanished into the darkness .

«Хорошо, хорошо!» — сказал Долохов. Но Петя не отпускал его, и Долохов сквозь мрак увидел, что Петя наклонился к нему и хотел его поцеловать. Долохов поцеловал его, засмеялся, повернул лошадь и исчез в темноте.

Having returned to the watchman 's hut , Pétya found Denísov in the passage . He was awaiting Pétya 's return in a state of agitation , anxiety , and self-reproach for having let him go .

Вернувшись в сторожевую избу, Петя нашел в коридоре Денисова. Он ждал возвращения Пети в волнении, тревоге и упреках себя за то, что отпустил его.
