" I hear , " Dron answered without lifting his eyes .

— Слышу, — ответил Дрон, не поднимая глаз.

Alpátych was not satisfied with this reply .

Алпатыча этот ответ не удовлетворил.

" Eh , Dron , it will turn out badly ! " he said , shaking his head .

— Эх, Дрон, плохо получится! — сказал он, покачав головой.

" The power is in your hands , " Dron rejoined sadly .

— Сила в твоих руках, — печально ответил Дрон.

" Eh , Dron , drop it ! " Alpátych repeated , withdrawing his hand from his bosom and solemnly pointing to the floor at Dron 's feet . " I can see through you and three yards into the ground under you , " he continued , gazing at the floor in front of Dron .

— Эх, Дрон, брось! — повторил Алпатыч, вынимая руку из-за пазухи и торжественно показывая на пол под ноги Дрона. — Я вижу тебя насквозь и вижу землю на три ярда под тобой, — продолжил он, глядя на пол перед Дроном.

Dron was disconcerted , glanced furtively at Alpátych and again lowered his eyes .

Дрон сконфузился, украдкой взглянул на Алпатыча и снова опустил глаза.

" You drop this nonsense and tell the people to get ready to leave their homes and go to Moscow and to get carts ready for tomorrow morning for the princess ' things .

«Вы бросьте эту ерунду и велите народу готовиться покинуть свои дома и ехать в Москву и готовить к завтрашнему утру телеги для вещей княгини.

And do n't go to any meeting yourself , do you hear ? "

А сам ни на какое собрание не ходи, слышишь?

Dron suddenly fell on his knees .

Дрон внезапно упал на колени.

" Yákov Alpátych , discharge me ! Take the keys from me and discharge me , for Christ 's sake ! "

«Яков Алпатыч, увольте меня! Возьмите у меня ключи и выпустите меня, ради Христа!»

" Stop that ! " cried Alpátych sternly . " I see through you and three yards under you , " he repeated , knowing that his skill in beekeeping , his knowledge of the right time to sow the oats , and the fact that he had been able to retain the old prince 's favor for twenty years had long since gained him the reputation of being a wizard , and that the power of seeing three yards under a man is considered an attribute of wizards .

"Прекрати это!" — строго вскричал Алпатыч. — Я вижу тебя насквозь и под тобой три аршина, — повторил он, зная, что его умение в пчеловодстве, его знание того, когда сеять овес, и то, что он сумел в течение двадцати лет сохранить благосклонность старого князя, уже давно завоевал ему репутацию волшебника, и что способность видеть человека на три ярда ниже себя считается атрибутом волшебника.

Dron got up and was about to say something , but Alpátych interrupted him .

Дрон встал и хотел что-то сказать, но Алпатыч перебил его.

" What is it you have got into your heads , eh ? ... What are you thinking of , eh ? "

— Что это у тебя в голове, а? ... О чем ты думаешь, а?

" What am I to do with the people ? " said Dron . " They 're quite beside themselves ; I have already told them ... "

«Что мне делать с людьми?» - сказал Дрон. «Они совершенно вне себя; Я им уже сказал...»

"' Told them , ' I dare say ! " said Alpátych . " Are they drinking ? " he asked abruptly .

" Quite beside themselves , Yákov Alpátych ; they 've fetched another barrel . "

-- Совсем вне себя, Яков Алпатыч; они принесли еще одну бочку.

" Well , then , listen ! I 'll go to the police officer , and you tell them so , and that they must stop this and the carts must be got ready . "

«Ну, тогда слушай! Я пойду к приставу, а ты им так и скажи, и чтобы они прекратили это и телеги надо приготовить».

" I understand . "

"Я понимаю."

Alpátych did not insist further . He had managed people for a long time and knew that the chief way to make them obey is to show no suspicion that they can possibly disobey . Having wrung a submissive " I understand " from Dron , Alpátych contented himself with that , though he not only doubted but felt almost certain that without the help of troops the carts would not be forthcoming

Алпатыч дальше не настаивал. Он долгое время управлял людьми и знал, что главный способ заставить их повиноваться — это не выказывать подозрений в том, что они могут не повиноваться. Вырвав у Дрона покорное «понимаю», Алпатыч этим удовлетворился, хотя не только сомневался, но был почти уверен, что без помощи войск обозы не двинутся вперед.

And so it was , for when evening came no carts had been provided . In the village , outside the drink shop , another meeting was being held , which decided that the horses should be driven out into the woods and the carts should not be provided . Without saying anything of this to the princess , Alpátych had his own belongings taken out of the carts which had arrived from Bald Hills and had those horses got ready for the princess ' carriages . Meanwhile he went himself to the police authorities .

Так оно и было, потому что к вечеру повозок не было. В деревне, возле питейного заведения, проводилось очередное собрание, которое решило, что лошадей следует выгнать в лес, а телег не давать. Ничего не говоря об этом княгине, Алпатыч велел вынуть свои вещи из прибывших из Лысых гор подвод и велел подготовить лошадей к каретам княгини. Тем временем он сам обратился в полицию.
