So were to me occasion of good hope ,

Так были бы для меня поводом доброй надежды,

The variegated skin of that wild beast ,

Пестрая шкура этого дикого зверя,

The hour of time , and the delicious season ;

Час времени и вкусный сезон;

But not so much , that did not give me fear

Но не настолько, чтобы меня не пугало

A lion 's aspect which appeared to me .

Явившийся мне львиный аспект.

He seemed as if against me he were coming

Казалось, он идет против меня.

With head uplifted , and with ravenous hunger ,

С поднятой головой и с хищным голодом,

So that it seemed the air was afraid of him ;

Так что, казалось, воздух его боялся;

And a she-wolf , that with all hungerings

И волчица, что со всеми голодами

Seemed to be laden in her meagreness ,

Казалось, она была отягощена своей скудностью,

And many folk has caused to live forlorn !

И многие люди стали жить одиноко!

She brought upon me so much heaviness ,

Она навлекла на меня столько тяжести,

With the affright that from her aspect came ,

С испугом, исходившим от нее,

That I the hope relinquished of the height .

Что я с надеждой отказался от высоты.

And as he is who willingly acquires ,

И каков тот, кто охотно приобретает,

And the time comes that causes him to lose ,

И приходит время, которое заставляет его проиграть,

Who weeps in all his thoughts and is despondent ,

Кто плачет во всех своих мыслях и уныает,

E'en such made me that beast withouten peace ,

Именно такой сделал меня этим зверем без покоя,

Which , coming on against me by degrees

Который, постепенно наступая на меня

Thrust me back thither where the sun is silent .

Верни меня туда, где солнце молчит.
