The face was still imperfect ; but gradually , by a magic touch , intelligence and sensibility brightened through the features , with all the effect of light gleaming forth from within the solid oak . It was a beautiful , though not precisely regular and somewhat haughty aspect , but with a certain piquancy about the eyes and mouth , which , of all expressions , would have seemed the most impossible to throw over a wooden countenance . And now , so far as carving went , this wonderful production was complete .
