Grand and the doctor left as night was falling . As though the event had shaken the neighbourhood out of its torpor , side streets began to fill once more with the hum of celebrating crowds . As they reached the house , Grand said goodbye to the doctor . He was going to work . But just before starting up the stairs he added that he had written to Jeanne and that he was happy now .
