At that moment Rieux saw Grand coming towards him . Grand knew nothing either . He had been prevented from going past and had learned that the shots were coming from his house . In fact , in the distance they could see the front of the house gilded by the last , cool rays of the sun . Around it was a wide open space which extended to the pavement opposite . In the middle of the road one could clearly see a hat and a scrap of dirty material . A long way off , on the other side of the street , Rieux and Grand could see a line of gendarmes , like the one that had prevented them from going on and behind which a few inhabitants of the area were quickly passing backwards and forwards . If they looked closely they could also see gendarmes holding revolvers , concealed in the doorways of buildings across the street from the house . All its shutters were closed , but on the second floor one seemed to be half hanging off . The silence in the street was total . The only sounds one could hear were intermittent bursts of music from the centre of town .

Если приглядеться, то можно было также увидеть жандармов с револьверами, спрятанных в дверях домов напротив дома. Все ставни в нем были закрыты, но на втором этаже одна, казалось, наполовину свисала. Тишина на улице была полной. Единственными звуками, которые можно было услышать, были прерывистые всплески музыки из центра города.
