The doctor dozed off , but the first wagon of dawn roused him . He shuddered and , looking at Tarrou , realized that there had been a pause and that the sick man was also sleeping . The wood and iron wheels of the horse - drawn wagon could be heard fading into the distance . Outside the window , it was still dark . When the doctor went over to the bed Tarrou was looking at him with expressionless eyes , as though still on the side of sleep .
