The day after next , a few days before the opening of the gates , Dr Rieux was coming home at lunchtime , wondering if he would find the telegram that he was expecting . Although his days were as exhausting as at the height of the plague , the expectation of being free at last had dispersed all his own tiredness . Now he had hope and he was pleased that he did . One cannot constantly tighten ones will and brace oneself , and it is a joy at last to release this bundle of forces plaited together for the struggle and to let them flow free . If the expected telegram was also favourable , then Rieux could start again . It felt to him as though everyone was starting again .
