The doctor hesitated , but Grand repeated the order in such a fearful tone and with such suffering in his voice , that Rieux threw the sheets onto the almost extinguished fire . The room was briefly lit up and warmed by a short burst of heat . When the doctor came back to the patient , Grand had his back turned and his face almost touching the wall . Tarrou was looking out of the window , as though a stranger to the scene . After injecting the serum , Rieux told his friend that Grand would not survive the night and Tarrou offered to stay . The doctor accepted .
