They had opened a new hospital and Rieux had no further private talks except with his patients . He did note , however , that at this stage in the epidemic , when the plague was increasingly adopting the pulmonary form , the patients seemed in a way to help the doctor . Instead of giving way to the prostration and madness of the early days , they seemed to have a better idea of their own interests , and demanded of their own accord what would be most beneficial to them . They continually asked for water and all wanted heat . Although the doctor felt the same tiredness , he did feel less alone in these circumstances .
