Suddenly a great flash of light came from the direction of the cries and a vague noise of shouting reached the two men along the stream of wind . The light faded at once and in the distance on the edge of the roofs there was only a reddish glow . The wind died down for a moment and one could distinctly hear men ’ s shouts , then the noise of a shot and the roar of a crowd . Tarrou got up and listened . Nothing more was to be heard .

Свет сразу померк и вдали на краях крыш осталось лишь красноватое зарево. Ветер на мгновение утих, и отчетливо послышались мужские крики, затем шум выстрела и рев толпы. Тарру встал и прислушался. Больше ничего не было слышно.
