They found the terrace empty , with three chairs on it . On one side , as far as the eye could see , all they could make out were roof terraces , which eventually came to rest against a dark rocky mass in which they recognized the first hill . On the other side , above a few streets and the port ( which was invisible ) , the eye was lost in a horizon where sky and sea mingled in a vague throbbing . Beyond what they knew to be the cliffs , a light reappeared regularly , though they could not see where it was coming from : since the previous spring , the lighthouse on the channel had continued to shine for ships headed for other ports . In the sky , swept clean and shining by the wind , the pure stars shone and , from time to time , the distant light of the lighthouse added its brief ember .
