When Rieux left the church , a sharp wind poured through the half - open door and struck the congregation full in the face . It brought a smell of rain into the church , a scent of damp pavements which warned them of how the town would look even before they went out . Walking in front of Dr Rieux , an old priest and a young deacon who were leaving at the same time had difficulty in keeping hold of their headgear . None the less , the older man went on speaking about the sermon . He paid tribute to Paneloux ’ s eloquence , but was worried about the audacity of the priest ’ s ideas . He considered that this sermon betrayed more uneasiness than strength and at Paneloux ’ s age a priest did not have the right to be uneasy .
