From this point of view the narrator thinks , even more than Rieux and Tarrou , that Grand was the real representative of the quiet virtue that inspired the health teams . He said yes without hesitating , with his habitual goodwill . He asked only to be useful in small ways . He was too old for anything more than that . He could give his time from six in the evening until eight . And when Rieux thanked him warmly , he was surprised : " There ’ s nothing hard about that . We have the plague and we must get rid of it . Ah , if only everything were so simple ! " And he went back to his sentence . Sometimes , in the evening , when work on the card index was finished , Rieux spoke to Grand . Eventually , they brought Tarrou into their conversation and Grand confided in his two comrades with more and more evident pleasure . They were interested to follow the patient work that Grand continued in the midst of the plague . Eventually , they too found a sort of outlet in it .
