In my translations I have tried to preserve both aspects, writing sometimes ten and even more versions of each sonnet until I was satisfied with the result. 'I chose to translate the sonnets because I feel that an understanding of the sonnets is very important for an understanding of Shakespeare the playwright. 'The sonnets are not museum pieces—they still, after all these centuries, express human emotions which are as fresh as ever.'
